Call for Papers “2nd DAAD Summer School for Postgraduates”
July 17th – 21st, 2012
Institute for German Studies, University of Birmingham, UK
The summer school will bring together postgraduate students working in the field of German Studies (social sciences, history, literature, law, cultural and media studies) from all over the UK to support cutting edge research on Germany, as well as to facilitate the establishment of research networks and interdisciplinary approaches. Furthermore the Summer School will function as a hub for career planning and professional and research training, focussing on career opportunities in the UK and Germany.
The overarching theme of this year’s summer school is “JUSTIFICATION / RECHTFERTIGUNG”. Justification is a central concept of philosophy, taking on the claim that any exercise of power must be justified to those over whom power is exercised. The summer school will focus on questions concerning the concept of justification as a norm, as well as with regard to justification in relational terms, as an issue of agency and in its practical aspects. We welcome offers of papers from all the disciplinary areas covered by the summer school. As an alternative to a paper, you may propose to present a poster of your research.
All PhD students registered at a British university are eligible to participate. A contribution of £50 is to be made by each participant. There is no conference fee and the organizers will cover all costs including accommodation, food, and travel. Proposals for papers should include the name, affiliation, and contact details (including email addresses) for all paper authors, as well as a brief (200 words) abstract and paper title. The deadline for all proposals is the 15th of December 2011. Successful applicants will be notified by mid-February 2012.
Proposals should be sent to: colcal-c-SomSchule@adf.bham.ac.uk.
